Ali Sabry’s contribution to legal system is invaluable, especially in respect of addressing law delays

Attorney-at-Law Nishan Premathiratne said this week newly appointed Justice Minister President’s Counsel Ali Sabry’s contribution to legal system is invaluable especially in respect of addressing law delays.

 “In 2016 when Sri Lanka was ranked 164th in the ‘World Bank doing Business Index’ for ‘Enforcement of Contacts’ taking over 1300 days to enforce a contract in our legal system, moreover when civil and criminal proceedings extend over seven to eight years on average, Sabry without fear or favour was instrumental in bringing these concerns to the then President, Prime Minister and other important stakeholders who were in attendance at the conference,” said Premathiratne who was the convenor of the 2016 National Law Conference.

Premathiratne said the National Law Conference is a landmark event in the Bar Association calendar which is attended by the Executive President, the Prime Minister, the Minister of Justice, the Chief Justice, the Attorney General and other stakeholders.

 “The Conference Committee headed by Sabry thereafter also with a panel of 30 Attorneys-at-Law produced a comprehensive legal report taking considerable period of time and presented such with facts and figures in respect of all forms of legal proceedings including partition, land, civil, commercial, criminal matters, etc. being set out along with comparisons effected with other jurisdictions world over in an attempt to address these issues found in the Sri Lankan legal system,” Premathiratne said.

“This report was handed over to the then President, Prime Minister and all other stakeholders. Unfortunately, Sri Lanka is still ranked 164th in the ‘World Bank doing Business Index’ for ‘Enforcement of Contacts’ taking over 1,300 days to enforce a contract and law’s delays is a serious issue which is affecting every member of society. Sabry having immense experience in these issues and with the considerable work he has effected through the legal fraternity, would undoubtedly address these issues and utmost confidence can be placed in him to do so,” Premathiratne added.
