Since freedom from the British, we were a people docile,
From then for 74 years, we were never hostile.
In the face of many governing atrocities, we kept a smile,
As we stomached everything, walking many a mile.
Was this the beginning, of this beautiful country's demise?
Since many a government did come and promise things precise.
Better living, freedom, etc as about previous rulers did they criticise.
Alas! The current rulers, took the plum as their strength did they exercise.
In government institutions, they surrounded themselves with their relatives,
Investors were made to cringe, with back-handed incentives.
Lucrative avenues to create, for the ruling family perhaps were their directives.
As an era of darkness did they establish, to suit their own personal objectives.
Law and order by bad governance, was brought to a pitiful state,
Questionable, as to their own whims and fancies did it relate.
The cost-of-living soaring, about it none to debate,
The nation as a whole, were never from suffering given a rebate.
The country's ethnic harmony, seriously disturbed,
White van syndromes, made living so feared,
As the coffers of the country, were heavily plundered,
Yet, we as a nation, stayed calm and none reared.
Fuel and gas with no electricity, as they did dictate,
Foreign currency reserves depleted making us a begging state.
Queuing up in the hot sun, our nation absorbed it till late,
As about the suffering of Sri Lankans, none came to mitigate.
Then the nation woke up, to all that was so wrong,
Historically unseen yet, a people’s power show demonstrated so strong.
Belittling the strongarm tactics, onto the roads did we all throng,
Demanding the controlling power, to step down as they did not there belong.
As one big family, casting religion race ethnicity aside we all took,
To the roads, parks, and social media as the government we shook.
In the years to come, as backwards generations will look,
And say! "Sri Lankans as a nation you showed the world, how to bring a government to book"!
Oh! My dear Sri Lankans, here and away,
You will always be saluted, as through it all you did not sway.
A plea to all, towards this new era and course to stay,
And be blessed, until we free our motherland from this miserable living way.
