I enjoyed reading Nigel Hatch’s opinion piece on Trump and America’s current crisis (‘Trump and democracy: Lessons from the USA’). And while it’s certainly true that “the Republican party lacks seniors in congress who have a bipartisan approach,” I would go even further.
A key part of Trump’s presidency has included his takeover of the Republican Party and GOP cowardice. Trump’s Congressional enablers – and there are many – continue to do serious damage. It’s important that their governance scorecards remain under the microscope in the coming years. We’re about to see a lot of reputation laundering.
Fortunately, this attempted coup is going to fail. But the possibility of more violence in the coming days is very real.
Trump deserves to be held accountable for the damage that he’s done. Impeaching him (again) is a good start. Nevertheless, his enablers need to be held accountable too.
