“We Republic” sends open letter to President, PM, Ministers, and former MPs

Urges action to resolve three major challenges faced by the Republic

We Republic movement yesterday sent the following open letter titled “Taking action to resolve the challenges being faced by the Republic” to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, Ministers and former Members of Parliament as well as the Leader of the Opposition.

The Republic is now faced with three major challenges:

1) Managing the SARS Cov-2 epidemic

2) Preventing the breakdown of the socio-economic constructs

3) Preventing the destabilisation of the Republic’s governance

These challenges have risen from one another and manifest with each other. They are amplifying due to various and complicated causes which may or may not be under the control of the Republic.

These challenges and their consequences will negatively affect not only us who are living today but also the citizens of the future.

Therefore it is the foremost obligation of all of us to act in all honesty to wisely resolve these challenges while managing them in balance. It is no longer possible for one person or one institution to undertake these complicated challenges by themselves.

We would like to remind you all that “Democracy” is a method of taking collective decisions. As citizen’s representatives it is not democratic for you to make decisions based on your personal and political party’s interests. We regretfully remind you that such decisions and actions taken by you all in the past have led to the decline of the Republic.

You all must be able to keep aside your political power battles and unite to take collective decisions for the betterment of the Republic during a challenging time like this. Such mature leadership will give confidence to the citizens. You all must remember that by trying to contest and win against each other will only lead to the ultimate failure of the Republic.

The creative ideas to resolve these and more challenges must come from the citizens of the Republic themselves. You must now enact your true “representative” role on behalf of the citizens.

Therefore we earnestly request all of you to unite and come together to make collective decisions, plan well and properly execute those decisions with the support of the citizens for the present and future success of the Republic.
