With reference to the centre page news item of 11 July under the above caption, I wish to address an open letter to Chandra Jayaratne, which I sincerely hope you will publish.
I am referring to your many letters on the subject of the so called ‘bond scam’, published in these newspapers and especially the letter to COPE Chairman and members.
You have assumed that members appointed by the Government are unaware of the stipulations and principles within which the committee has to report. They are aware of their responsibilities and it is high-handed to assume otherwise.
The Chairman is a very informed and competent appointee who has been applauded for unbiased criticism.
Activism for the sake of ‘activism’ is a useless exercise. Continuous barraging of COPE, Monetary Board, Members of Parliament, the Central Bank, etc. is unbecoming.
Regurgitating and chewing the cud is a bovine pastime.
Haranguing, copious letters to the Prime Minister and the President is ineffective and arrogant. They perform extensive, demanding official and political duties managing and balancing an extremely sensitive, vulnerable Unity Government.
The fabric of Sri Lankan society and economy, as it is now, is threadbare. To rip it apart is intellectual immaturity to say the least.
