I wish to refer to the above news report in your paper of 25 June. It mentions that Gotabaya Rajapaksa has had discussions with leaders of civil and religious Muslim organisations. As expected, it was about the recent communal clashes. Muslims are relieved there have been some discussions. As to who these Muslim leaders are, and as to what was discussed are all shrouded in secrecy. Further, it goes on to state that it ended with both sides agreeing to a media embargo! As for the Government side wanting a media embargo can be understood as there has been a “media black-out” since the first incidents. Those claiming to represent the Muslims have no right to agree to this, as every Muslim is concerned about what action has been taken against the perpetrators of these atrocities, and as to what preventive measures are being taken to avoid future clashes. The ACJU does not have to educate us on the history of Buddhists and Muslims living peacefully over the past. What we Muslims want is for action against the BBS monk who made a very provocative speech followed by all the violence. There have been calls for action against him by the O.P.A and the President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka, and other civil right groups. We request, the Defence Secretary to issue a media release revealing as to those who participated in these talks and the decisions taken. Surely this is not asking too much, is it?
