In my opinion, there are three fundamental reasons for the socioeconomic/political challenges that the world encounters today, i.e. greed, ego and materialism. All of these start with healthy pursuits, such as ambition (that turns into greed), self esteem (that turns into destructive ego) and comfort (that turns into materialism).
Today’s business models, organisational cultures and corporate lifestyles are the main culprits that drive greed, ego and materialism. I firmly believe that change has to start with businesses and that corporate performance need not be sacrificed in the process. How do we ensure our future business leaders are able to strike this balance? Should this be their first lesson in business school or is that too late?
