Saving of electricity charges

It is of paramount importance that cost of electricity consumption be reduced. It is the duty of the Government and consumers to consider ways of achieving this target.

At present we obtain electricity from coal (fossil fuels), which is called a non-renewable source. By this method the environment gets polluted. The other method is to obtain the same from natural resources – air, water, sunlight, etc. These are called renewable sources (green power). However, this method is costly and cannot be adopted on a mass scale.

In India they have started power plants operating on atomic energy. However, it has raised several issues on health hazards, etc., and may not be continued.

Our Government should continue research with foreign collaboration to find a suitable method of producing electricity at minimum cost. In the meantime efforts should be taken to reduce the cost of electricity production.

Usage of generators may be beneficial in which case duty concessions should be offered to import suitable generators for companies. It is better to have a close watch on electricity supplies. Street lights should switched on at 7 p.m. and be switched off at 5:30 a.m. (based on present sunset and sunrise times). This period should be adjusted from time to time. On several occasions it has been observed that street lights are burning during the daytime. This must be stopped.

Consumers should concentrate on the control of usage of the following: lights, TVs, computers, air conditioners, fans, irons, washing machines, microwave ovens, electric cookers, etc.

The following action is suggested:

When leaving a room ensure that all electrical items (light, fan, computer, etc.) are switched off.

It is better to have a common room for all to watch TV and for dining, etc.

Frequent switching on and switching off electricity supply for lights, fans, refrigerator, etc., result in excess consumption of electricity.

Please use Compact Florescent Bulbs (CFC). These may be costly but have longer usage at reduced cost.

It is better to use the garden (if available) by family members for their relaxation and discussions.

Cooking in the early mornings and late evenings may be avoided. It is better to plan proper timing.

Use automatic controllers in the use of lights, iron, computers, etc.

Keep all electrical items cleaned regularly. This is important.

Plan the usage – computer, washing machine, microwave, etc.

Ensure the supply is stopped when not using lights, computer, etc. For example, you may keep the computer on sleeping mode when not in use.

Finally, when the Government makes suggestions, for example non-usage during peak hours, please cooperate with the suggested procedure, without finding ways and means and excuses to avoid it. Also please avoid major electricity consumption by illuminations for functions as much as you can.

It is reported that after the tsunami in 2004, Japanese people kept air temperature controllers at 28°c and avoided wearing full suits to save electricity. We must create such patriotism amongst our people.
