To CEB - Grant access to read electricity meters

The dwellers of the Armour Street flats in Colombo are not in a position to read their electricity meters.

I would appreciate if the room in which the meters are kept is not locked in order to allow any occupant of the flat to monitor their electricity usage i.e. to grant access to read their meters. You may cover the meters as a safety or security measure with glass and a wooden frame (to prevent anyone tampering with the meters) similar to a notice board.

I hope you will consider my humble request to facilitate the householders who want to control their usage of electricity which no doubt is invaluable and has to be conserved.

Why not implement this request for all the other flats or apartments so that electricity consumption can be monitored by all householders in order to keep a check on the usage?

Do we not have the right as consumers to check our meters as it is us who have to foot the bill? And isn’t the CEB to oblige by even fixing the meters in their respective premises and not place all the meters in one room and keep it padlocked and make it inaccessible?

Meter readers being human, the possibility of them making mistakes in the reading cannot be ruled out. Therefore, it is right that we do have access to the meters although they may be the property of the CEB.
