Also on sale will be jute rugs, serviettes, dish towels, pot holders, art and craft items, wrapping paper and wood work articles. Snacks, drinks and lunch Packs will be available
Situated in the quiet neighborhood of Havelock Town, the Centre has 25 students from all walks of life. The dedicated staff includes speech and occupational therapists, psychologists, and English, mathematics, art, pottery and woodwork teachers.
It is a non-profit organisation, which specialises in the rehabilitation of mentally disadvantaged males. The Centre’s main focus is in taking care of males suffering from Autism, Down syndrome, Cerebral Palsy and even those who are retarded in their mental growth. These disabilities make them slow learners in many ways, thereby making their entrance to society that much more difficult.
“The Centre is currently looking at expanding their services to the specially-abled by providing permanent hostel facilities, to continue caring for them once those in their families are unable to do so,” said Charika Muttiah, Executive Director, The Colombo Centre for Special Education.
“As the Centre functions are entirely dependent on the kindness and generosity of benefactors, we request the public to attend this exhibition and thereby show their support and encourage those with special needs.”
“The Colombo Centre is taking this opportunity to display the range of talents present at the Centre as well as create some awareness and respect for individuals with similar needs in our society,” she added.
The Centre also has its own respite facility composed of restrooms, a kitchen and activity rooms. The students can stay here at a very nominal rate.
