Access Engineering completes Veyangoda Flyover ahead of schedule

The Veyangoda Flyover national project was completed cogently by Access Engineering PLC, utilising state-of-the-art technology with compliance to the most stringent quality and safety standards. The design and the construction of the flyover were executed by Centunion S.A of Spain and Access Engineering PLC with funds from the Government of Spain. The flyover was ceremonially declared opened by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The metropolis landscape of Veyangoda has been transformed significantly with the opening of the long anticipated flyover which virtually eliminates the elongated road traffic delays in the Nittambuwa- Katunayake road and the Dee Ella, caused by the movement of trains at the Veyangoda railway crossing. Around 96 trains are supposed to be plying over the Veyangoda railway crossing necessitating the closure of the rail gate as frequently as 100 to 120 times per day, causing severe inconvenience to the neighbourhood and the commuters. Trade Zones-bound traffic and daily commuters amassed at the level crossing, up and over the railway, minimising the local traffic impact. This 345 m long flyover which is comprised of a 3.5 metre wide wo -lane carriageway and 1.2 metre wide two pedestrian ways is based on a seven-span steel superstructure. The approach roads are 355 metres in length and have 1.5 metre wide pedestrian walks on either side. “Its location on the main access route to the Katunayake International Airport from the Kandy road itself made this a challenging project but we made it our top priority to complete it ahead of schedule,” said Jeewaka Dahanayaka, Project Manager of the Veyangoda Flyover Construction Project. “Having to complete the project ahead of schedule yet again demonstrates our commitment to be a key stakeholder in the national infrastructure development initiative.” Since completion of the project, the immediate surroundings have seen some fast track development especially around the access points from Katunayake and Ruwanwella which has benefited the community of Veyangoda and surrounding areas. As part of the CSR initiative, the Access Engineering Project Team worked hand in hand to assist the community through specific environmental and community based improvements.
