“It is a right of the people to have chemical and poison free vegetables, fruits and other food items,” said Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena at the opening of the Diyawanna Family Fair at Diyatha Uyana, Battaramulla recently.
The Minister, who participated as Chief Guest of the opening ceremony, added that the Family Fair has provided a very good opportunity to urban consumers to buy high quality food and other home requirements directly from producers.
The fair is organised by the Centre for Agribusiness Development (CAD) with assistance from the Ministry of Agriculture.
This attractive fair venue, Diyatha Uyana, was developed by the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development as a part of the overall Colombo City Development Program with leisure areas, food courts and walking paths.
The fair features 130 stalls from product categories of fruits, vegetables, food products, eco and village products, meat, footwear and leather, kitchen items, textiles, home décor and interior, handicrafts as well as books and educational items.
In order to provide consumers with a complete market experience and a wide range of products, CAD has linked up with major producers and distributors of food and grocery items to sell their products directly from factory to consumers.
CAD Director Krishantha Wisenthige said: “All vendors have been selected through a careful selection process from small and medium organisations as well as from the corporate sector to ensure the quality and reliability of the products so that consumers will have high quality and reliable products at the best price at this Family Fair.”
He added that Family Fair would soon become a very popular place among urban families for shopping and leisure due to the high quality of goods, location, convenient access and parking plus dining facilities.
