Top international architect Mark Baughman recently visited Sri Lanka as a speaker at the National Conference of Architect 2013 organised by the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects.
Expressing his views on Architect 2013, he said: “I think it has been a beautifully produced program and it was a really spectacular event. I’m very impressed.”
He further expressed his wish to work in architectural projects in Sri Lanka and said: “It’s really a beautiful place. Everyone here have been extremely kind and I appreciate that very much.”
Architect 2013, the 31st Annual Session of SLIA, took place from 20 to 24 February 2013 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) and included a line of events that centerd on the theme ‘Think Smart – Innovative Enterprise Architecture’.
With more than 25 years of experience as a project architect and designer, Archt. Mark Baughman first started his education as a Physics major in Boston University. However, soon discovering an affinity towards Architecture he enrolled in the University of Arkansas and graduated in 1980 with a Bachelors of Art in Architecture.
Having chosen a career that perfectly suited his personality and skills, Archt Baughman gained experience by becoming part of his sister’s interior design firm situated in Washington DC after which he decided to pursue a Master’s in the University of Colombia, New York, USA. Here he was able to expand his knowledge in the field of Architecture and in 1987 he graduated from the University with a Master of Science in Architecture.
He is now a Managing Partner of SKB Architecture and Design situated in Washington, DC. He has worked nearly 18 years in the firm and has accrued much experience. The firm represents Archt. Baughman’s view of combining practicality with the intellectual side of architecture and has undertaken projects related to law firms, corporations, non-profits and hospitality.
Furthermore, since 1988 he has been working with Sarah’s Circle, a non-profit organisation providing housing to low income seniors and was also involved with the Community Service Committee of Washington, DC as Co-Chair, providing leadership for the renovation of 18 parks.
The most significant project in his career, according to Archt. Baughman is the project involving designing the World Bank building in Antananarivo, Madagascar and so far he has been involved in nearly 150 small projects in about 100 countries.
His work has also been exhibited at the University of Virginia and the National Building museum in Washington, DC. The accolades he has received thus far includes Masonry Institute Award of Excellence, the Young Architect’s Forum Award, and the University of Arkansas Alumni Design Award.
