Architects to design reconciliation bridge

The Sri Lanka Institute of Architects (SLIA), as part of its CSR initiative, transported 90 students from Jaffna to attend the exhibition on architecture at the BMICH. The schoolchildren were from Hindu College Jaffna and Kokuvil Hindu College. The event, attempting to raise awareness of the profession and to create a dialogue, helped the students understand the importance of architecture, especially in reconciliation attempts of the nation. SLIA Vice President D.H. Wijewardana said that as professionals, architects could contribute significantly to reconciliation. He believes that the contribution from architects to building peace is significant. Additionally, the SLIA is focused on safeguarding the architectural heritage of the country, by protecting and renovating old buildings. The institute recently carried out the renovation of a 100-year old building in Jaffna, saving it from being torn down. The SLIA believes in saving old buildings and renovating them, rather than in destroying them to make way for new buildings.
