Holcim (Lanka), as the leading cement manufacturer in Sri Lanka has diminished rules of traditional sustainable commitment towards the future of Sri Lanka. By doing so Holcim has introduced a new concept in order to manage non-biodegradable waste at our workplace. It is called ‘Greenbank’, a bank like no other. Holcim felt the need to spread the message of sustainable waste management on individual level as well particularly within Holcim, its own workplace and household. It also aims to provide a convenient and an attractive means of disposing office and household waste, thereby reinforcing green habits among Holcim employees, their families and other corporate organisations. Greenbank celebrated its first phase of success at an event held in the Colombo office on 22.08.2013 Greenbank was first started during the latter parts of 2012 as a corporate social responsibility, creating a platform to dispose in-house waste (waste collected at employee households as well as their place of work) with respect to the waste management hierarchy. This initiative was very well backed and blessed by the top management of Holcim (Lanka) providing a much needed support. Through the course of the last one year it has been a real success. At a closer look, Greenbank has taken us a little step closer to making our environment an even better place to live.  Greenbank is about streamlining waste management and segregation among staff of Holcim and Geocycle. For many it’s a hassle to dispose household waste. Improper disposal of waste harms the environment and creates unprecedented health hazards. Greenbank will provide an ideal solution for waste management and disposal and will also reward people who contribute. Together they have made a real difference when looking at the above environmental savings. The enthusiasm and active participation for this ultimate cause were the success. During this ceremony it was once again emphasised the importance of sustaining Greenbank productivity and how we may further improve current processes and procedures. Greenbank plans to revitalise its future by promoting its services to more and more internal as well as external stakeholders, providing them with a doorstep solution to manage their solid waste in the most environmentally friendly manner. Greenbank has proven a real corporate hit. Following the success of this project, there had been many requests by other public and private sector organisations. This includes some prominent national universities in Sri Lanka as well. Holcim (Lanka) Colombo, Holcim (Lanka) Puttalam and Swiss development agency in Colombo have already initiated and sustain this great initiative at present. As the next step forward the latest Greenbank point opened at Holcim Ruhunu cement works on 8 October 2013. Following just one example as to how we have contributed towards saving our environment.
