Ceylon Continental Hotel was awarded Joint Championship Winners at the Black Box Culinary Competition at the Sri Lanka Exhibition & Convention Centre. The award was conferred upon the Hotel by the Chefs Guild of Lanka together with Montgomery Worldwide UK.
The esteemed Chef Rainer, Head of the German National Team, was appointed Head Judge along with established and certified culinary professionals from the World Association of Chefs’ Societies making up the rest of the panel.
“The participants were faced with stiff competition from the other sixteen competing hotels which included all of Colombo’s five star hotels, but the team’s talent, dedication and teamwork won them the Championship,” said General Manager Kamal Munasinghe.
The winning team from Ceylon Continental will receive a Team Trophy, certificates and airline tickets, at the awards ceremony to be held on 3 November. In addition, two of the Ceylon Continental team members will receive a unique opportunity to take part in the biggest global Culinary Competition held in UK.
The innovative Black Box Culinary Competition was based on creating a three course menu inclusive of dessert within 90 minutes – given a mystery ingredient basket and a choice of a minimum of six items from a common ingredient table.
Points were awarded based on the creativity, recipe chosen, menu compilation, cleanliness, correct and professional preparation, arrangement, presentation and the flavour. Safe and hygienic work methods in work, during and after the completion of the event were also taken into consideration in awarding points. Taste preservation of the food both in quality, flavour and colour standards as well as nutritional values were key considerations. The talented members of the winning team were Jeewanthi Kawshalya, Roshan Pushpakumara, Ganesh Dias and Manoha Deshapriya, led by Senior Executive Chef Tilak Senarathne, Executive Sous Chef Ashan and Executive Pastry Chef Anura.
The Ceylon Continental Hotel is now owned and managed by the Hayleys Group.
