With over 33,000 members in over 31 countries worldwide, CILT holds unparalleled professional and international recognition. Established in 1919 and receiving its Royal Charter in 1926, the institute has an exciting history behind it, though always adapting to stay consistent with current logistics and transport issues. The Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport in Sri Lanka was established in 1985 and incorporated by an Act of Parliament in 2000. The Sri Lanka branch became a Territory with effect from 1 January 2013, which gave the institute more autonomy to manage its activities and provide more value to its membership. The outgoing Chairman Romesh David reviewing the activities of CILT SL during his tenure said that the year 2013 ended with a diverse range of activities among every strata of membership and hosting of the Global Convention was the most significant among all. “The manner in which we conducted the CILT Global convention – 2013 has raised CILT SL’s credibility among the CILT Global family that helped to establish firmly the territorial status.” He commended the excellent performance of various subcommittees appointed with specific responsibilities, with special mention about Women in Logistics and Transport ((WiLAT) forum and the Young Professionals Forum (YPF) for their untiring efforts and all targeted activities planned collectively by the Executive Committee helped in maintaining a healthy financial position. Finally he thanked all office bearers, members of the council and Chairpersons who led those subcommittees for their unstinted support and cooperation extended in achieving these successes. The newly-elected Chairman of Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport Sri Lanka Niral Kadawatharatchie addressing the AGM expressed his gratitude to the past Chairman Romesh David, the council and the members present for his election to the chair and for the confidence placed in him to lead the association. He pledged to continue the good work started by the immediate past Chair and other past Chairmen and to uplift the profession of logistics and transport to be on par with other professions like accountancy or engineering. In order to accomplish this he proposed to concentrate in providing more educational opportunities to members that would invariably help them improve their knowledge in the industry. This would also help in adding better qualified professionals in to the membership who could reap the benefits of recent infrastructure developments in the country aimed at becoming the ‘Regional Logistics and Transport Hub,’ bringing in more economic benefits to the country. Such professionalism in our membership will pave the way for CILT to register its trademark profoundly in the society and in the industry, becoming the authoritative Institute and the ‘think tank’ for the logistics and transport sector in Sri Lanka. He indicated his determination to accelerate this process continuing the action initiated by the past Chairman although it may take longer than a spell of a two-year tenure under his Chairmanship. Speaking on the scope and the potential of the recently-established sub committees of CILT, the Women in Logistics and Transport (WiLAT) forum and the Young Professionals Forum (YPF), Kadawatharatchie indicated that these two fora and reactivating the corporate partnerships more aggressively should be the engine of growth of the institute that would bring in diversity and much more energetic young blood in enhancing the membership of CILT SL.
