The foundation-laying ceremony of the 1,000 Housing Units Project to be carried out by a Chinese company was held last week in Hulhumale with the participation of Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed.

In his remarks, Nasheed expressed his appreciation to the Chinese government for facilitating this project, saying it will bring prosperity and development to the Maldivian people.

For her part, Chinese Ambassador Yang Xiuping said, “Providing affordable living has been an area in the government’s agenda.

I am very glad that the Chinese company, CMEC, won the bid of the project of 1,000 Housing Units in Hulhumale. I wish it every success.”

She believed that with the support and assistance of the Maldivian government, the CMEC will complete the project with higher quality and efficiency.

Li Chaoyang, vice president of the CMEC pledged at the ceremony that his company will abide by the Maldivian laws and respect the folkways and customs of the Maldivian people in the process of carrying out the project.

“We will strictly implement the contract, elaborately organized the construction works, and ensure the quality of the project. We will deliver an eco-friendly, enjoyable and high quality residential area for the Maldivian people,” said Li.

The 1,000 housing units will be built in a land area of 39,614. 4 square meters in Hulhumale, a reclaimed island about 1.3 km north of the capital Male to meet the existing and future housing, industrial and commercial development demands of the Male region.

Hulhumale is currently underutilized relative to other central atolls in the Maldives. It would take the lead of the government to improve utilization by moving government ministers, government departments and public institutions to Hulhumale and assisting public servants with relocation costs.
