Coats going green

Coats Thread Exports (Private) Ltd. has launched a cooperation with Geocycle in handling its waste and to make sure that it operates in an environmental friendly manner.

“The main focus of this partnership is to make our business more aligned with the concept of green factories which are emerging in the local garment industry in Sri Lanka.

Coats, which has set industry standards in the area of sewing solutions, has now taken the initiative to set the ground rules for ‘guilt free,’ socially responsible manufacturing to make our industry more environmentally viable. Coats was started way back in 1755 by James and Patrick Coats of Paisley, Scotland as a small business to supply loom parts and needle eyes. The business grew slowly but steadily and after 57 years, in 1812, it was able to put up a mill in Paisley to manufacture cotton thread.

By 2000, almost two and half centuries later, Coats stood as the number one sewing thread manufacturer in the world, claiming one quarter of the world share, operating in circa 70 countries around the globe.

Coats worldwide produced textiles, garments, trims, zips and crafts and various kinds of apparel thread. In 2000, Coats took another strategic decision to sell all its diversified businesses and to focus only on the thread business.

Today, Coats maintains its position employing more than 20,000 staff all over the world. Coats is unique in being the only thread company that can meet all its customers’ technical and quality requirements globally.
