AOD student Nithya Lamahewa wins Coats fashion award

Coats Thread Exports and other industry leaders supported a special fashion show that celebrated the young talent in fashion, hosted by the Academy of Design (AOD).

AOD’s final year fashion undergraduate Nithya Lamahewa was presented a prestigious award by global thread leader Coats Thread.

Coats Global Marketing Director –   Apparel Thread, David Goodwin awarded Nithya with the Coats award in recognition of her innovative use of dormant/waste sewing thread to create textiles and surface texture used for fashion.

Coats Thread has worked with AOD for an extended period, supporting young designers, encouraging them to involve new technology and craft in fashion.

AOD Principal Karen MacLeod thanked Coats for its continued support. “Coats has been a wonderful partner to work with and they’re genuinely dedicated to promoting young fashion designers and design technology; in other words, the future of the apparel industry,” she said.

Coats Lanka Managing Director Giles Watkins mentioned that he was pleased to award a budding designer with Coats’ recognition.

“Coats has a great relationship with apparel manufacturers all over the world and we’re keen to extend that relationship to international design schools like the AOD and support them in producing designers who can work with the industry; we feel this is a crucial part in strengthening the apparel sphere,” he added.

The young talent fashion show was hosted by SL Design Festival with the Academy of Design.
