Enable The Disabled is privileged to host a special interactive workshop for parents/care givers/teachers/therapists of children with special needs on 8 and 9 December 2013 at Kadiragamar Hall, Horton Place, Colombo 7. Disabilities can be categorised into two main types – Physical and Intellectual. a: Intellectual disability or development disabilities – Children with mental disability/psychiatric disability; b: Physical disability – CVhildren with visual/hearing/speech and physical disabilities This workshop will cover both categories with the intention of making people understand better where their limitations are in terms of teaching, therapy and resources that would be of benefit through early intervention. It also hopes to educate parents and teachers on the importance and value of early intervention. Through this workshop we plan to take the first steps towards changing mindsets that persons with disabilities/disorder too can become functional members of society. Moderator The workshop will be moderated by Margaret R. Nathan. Her centre educates parents and care givers on how we could do more for children with special needs. With the correct and appropriate assessment she introduces and implements programs for each child according to their specific needs. With a variety of teaching/therapy styles and methods she shows how we can bring about significant and positive developments in all children with special needs and definitely give a new lease of life of quality and dignity. She runs the only school in Singapore that guarantees a positive and significant difference in children in the first month of enrollment. She shows us how to look at children as children first, before looking into their disability. Benefit for participants An opportunity to listen first hand on how to understand and act with children with special needs. She explains the therapies, and methods to be followed. She will have one- to-one discussions with participants on their individual challenges and how best to cope.
