Faisza Musthapha appointed President of Companies Disputes Board

By S.S. Selvanayagam Fathima Faisza Musthapha Markar was appointed as the President of the Companies Disputes Board established under the Companies Act No. 07 of 2007. She comes from an illustrious legal background. She is the daughter of Faisz Musthapha, President’s Counsel, who is a leading practitioner in the appellate courts. The Board comprises of Attorneys-at-Law namely, Faisza Musthapha Markar, Meerasahib Mahroof, W.A. Thilanka Weerasinghe, B. Manawadu and Shiraz M. Noordeen. The Board is empowered to mediate disputes arising from the Companies Act or which relate to the affairs or management of any company or a court, may if it thinks fit, refer any proceedings pending before such court to mediation before a member of the Companies Board, with the consent of all parties to that proceeding. Faisza is a past pupil of CMS Ladies’ College. She holds an LL.B (Hons) Degree and a Masters Degree from the University London, in Commercial and Corporate Law. She is also a Barrister-at-Law of Lincoln’s Inn. She is a partner of the Legal Firm, Macon & Associates, which provides advisory services to corporate and individual businesses.  Faisza, representing Macon & Associates, has provided legal advice to several international investors and successfully negotiated several development projects. She is a regular practitioner in the Appellate Courts in the areas of fundamental rights, writs, commercial law and public interest litigation. Always one to be involved in multiple things, Faisza Markar is a legal advisor to many renowned companies and also serves as a Director in her husband’s travel firm, Continents & Oceans Travel Ltd. Putting her multiple talents and interest to good use she recently began Effendi Ltd, with a friend who is a business entrepreneur. A jewellery shop specialising in 18 Carat Gold jewellery set with precious stones and Diamond jewellery, Effendi gave her the opportunity to turn an old hobby of hers into a successful growing enterprise. She was appointed as an ‘Ambassador of Change’ by the Business and Professional Women (BPW) in Sri Lanka and is a founder member of the Commonwealth Business Women (Sri Lanka) Leadership Group. No matter how many enterprises she is involved in, Faisza never fails to make time for her family and close friends, without whom she believes she would never have made her life the success it is today. She is forever committed to her motto in life ‘Learn from yesterday, live for today and hope for tomorrow’.
