Geocycle, Sri Lanka’s leading licensed services provider for managing hazardous industrial waste in an environmentally responsible manner, recently renewed a long-term partnership with Hayleys Dipped Products. This will enable Geocycle, waste management arm of Holcim Lanka, to successfully manage industrial waste without any impact on the environment or the communities surrounding industrial work sites.
Geocycle commenced comprehensive waste mapping at Hayleys Dipped Products four years ago; the agreement has been renewed for the fifth consecutive year for all five factories of Hayleys Dipped Products, namely DPL Premier Gloves Ltd., Hanwella Rubber Ltd., Grossart Ltd., DPL Universal Gloves Ltd. and Dipped Products PLC.
“DPL is committed to ethical manufacturing. Our operations are conducted in ways that are always in harmony with the sustainability principles. We are ISO 14001 certified and go beyond the norms of the industry practices that integrate our supply chain into driving value for our customers. Our initiative with the FIRSTLIGHT rubber farmers has won national and international awards for its innovative and unique ways of value addition to society and the environment. The Agreement with Geocycle to manage our waste matter in production is another feature that demonstrates our commitment to sustainability in our operations. We have entered into the fifth year with Geocycle valuing its services that strengthen our commitment to meet the aspiration of all our stakeholders,” said Dr. K.I.M. Ranasoma, CEO of DPL.
“As we mark successful operations spanning over 12 years in March 2015, we note with pride that it has been a remarkable journey,” said Randeewa Malalasooriya, General Manager of Geocycle. “Geocycle possesses unique know-how and expertise in safe handling and disposal of waste generated from industrial processes. Using their highly acclaimed technology of co-processing, which allows industrial waste to be managed responsibly and safely without environmental liabilities, we have been engaging consistently in Sri Lanka’s waste management sphere with outstanding success.”
“Co-processing is a proven waste management practice in deployment within the global Holcim community; it is operational in around 39 countries, with over 4,500 customers making use of its services. We have been providing professional waste management solutions for over 250 local and multinational organisations in Sri Lanka while managing over 430,000Mts of industrial and agricultural waste in the most environmentally responsible manner,” he added.
Already, Geocycle has processed over 1,700MT of hazardous waste safely on behalf of the Hayleys Dipped Products. The nature of waste co-processed has been waste water treatment plant sludge, chemical sludge, waste talc, waste flock, paper and polythene, contaminated paper and polythene bags, boiler soot and ash, coagulated latex, waste compound and synthetic scrap and ceramic mould.
Geocycle has also provided a large scale knowledge improvement project that has contributed tremendously towards reinforcing the concept of sustainability at DPL, said Sanjeewa Chulakumara, Manager Sales and Marketing for Geocycle. Employee education sessions on waste management, chemicals handling, environment management (ISO-14000) with emphasis on regulatory requirements and fire safety sessions have been conducted by Geocycle at DPL premises with over 600 officials and workers trained.
Geocycle has also provided plant visits to obtain a better understanding of best practices while a Greenbank concept, already functioning at Holcim Lanka, has also been proposed for Hayleys Dipped Products.
