Four pioneering organisations specialising in ship owning, crew management and crew training, frames the newly appointed Mercmarine Group of Companies.
The Group’s founding organisation, Reederei Eugen Friederich GmbH & Co. KG (REF), is one of the oldest shipping companies in Germany, specialising in ship owning and managing for 96 years. Mercantile Marine Management (MMM) is the flagship company of the Mercmarine Group of Companies with over 16 years of experience in crew management and ship management.
Established in 1981 as a German-Sri Lankan joint venture, the Mercantile Shipping Company PLC (MSCL) is Sri Lanka’s first privately owned shipping company owning the largest and most modern fleet of ships. The Mercantile Seamen Training Institute (MSTI) is backed with 26 years of experience in training in the maritime field.
Mercmarine owns a fleet of seven vessels which are geared with multipurpose, conventional and break-bulk capabilities, offering time charters on short and mid-term voyage charters, as well as long-term contracts across international waters. Mercmarine further manages up to 28 ships and supplies crews to 50 ships, successfully combining German shipping expertise with Sri Lanka’s long-standing experience in the maritime industry.
Over 1,400 Sri Lankan seafarers have graduated from the privately owned, state-of-the-art MSTI Rating Training Centres based in Galle. Mercmarine’s services are certified by Det Norsek Veritas to ISO 9001-2000 standards and its training arm has obtained the ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System Certification.
A team of experienced, dedicated and highly trained seafarers is what inspired the Mercmarine Group’s tagline ‘Propelled by Passion’. Mercmarine is reputed for their loyal and passionate seafarers who are well known for maintaining strong, long-term relationships across the seas. Mercmarine utilises its training centres to continue to cultivate a new generation of exceptional crews, officers and ratings. Mercmarine’s new identity goes beyond highlighting the technical prowess of the Group to describe the added value of doing business with four companies that come with decades of experience. 90 years in the maritime industry makes Mercmarine a cut above the rest. Combining four leading companies under the Mercmarine banner is in the interest of offering a more collaborative and thus superior service to Mercmarine’s stakeholders.
The new identity of the Mercmarine Group of Companies promises to propel the Group’s services towards greater achievements and grander horizons. MMM recently partnered with NSB, a German crew management company, to launch NSB Mercmarine, solely dedicated to managing and supplying crews to all NSB fleets.
In 2012, H&M Shipping Services Ltd., a joint venture between Hemas Transportation Ltd. and MSCL launched a deep sea crew service that includes the brand new crew boats ‘MercMas I’ and ‘MercMas II’.
