The new Sayurupaya administrative complex at Magam Ruhunupura Mahinda Rajapaksa Port, Hambantota was unveiled by President Mahinda Rajapaksa last week. The building, situated within the new Magam Ruhunupura Port, overlooks the whole development area and will serve as a nerve centre for operations at the port. Designed by Tanya and Suren Wickremasinghe Architects, the building was inspired by the sail of merchant ship. “We hoped to reflect the vibrant history of Hambantota, as well as to portray its current energy and development,” said TSWA Director Tanya Wickremasinghe FIA (SL). “The distinctive curve of the building with a cascading series of balconies on one side makes for an uplifting work environment as well offering a constantly changing panoramic view.” The Sri Lanka Ports Authority’s requirement was to have a symbolic structure to serve as a marker to the entrance of the new MRMR Port. The building, tallest outside greater Colombo, was designed with the use of computer simulation by engineering consultants STEMS to meet stringent seismic standards as well as to overcome the high wind speeds that are experienced in the area. The contractor for the building was MAGA.
