Island Dairies set the benchmark for dairy quality in Sri Lanka when they scooped the coveted and prestigious ISO 22000:2005/HACCP accreditation in lieu of the company’s continued commitment to quality. The award was presented to Island Dairies in recognition for outstanding quality handling of their range of products.

“This is a tribute to our talented employees,” said Managing Director Sampath Liyanage. “We acquired this dairy in 1984 and have been working hard ever since to build on the foundation laid by our founder Chairman Deshabandhu Deshamanya Lankaputhra Liyanage Karunaratna. We are honoured that our production lines have been recognised among its peers in the country, which are already certified for exceptional quality standards, and therefore hope to uphold our tradition of quality, pure farm freshness and flavour in each product bearing our name.”

The company is in constant communication with the Veterinary Research Institute (VRI) who have since the inception provided technical support, advisory services and quality testing reporting which has enabled Island Dairies to continually improve product quality while meeting stringent hygiene standards.

With their guidance, Island Dairies has grown to now possess a well-equipped modern factory in Kegalle, with high production efficacy and well trained workforce. Other contributors to the company’s success are the Director General of the Department of Animal Production and Health Dr. W.K. de Silva and the Minister of Livestock and Rural Community Development Arumugam Thondaman and the Secretary with whose invaluable support the company hopes to achieve self-sufficiency amongst the farming community, resulting in economic prosperity to the country. The company also hopes to venture into the export market in the near future.

The company owns and operates a fully equipped factory in Kegalle producing a range of dairy products, all sourced from dairy farmers in Sabaragamuwa, Central and North Western provinces, especially in the regions of the coconut triangle. Over 10,000 litres of milk is collected daily from farmers at present, which is held in the factory’s cold storage facilities.

The products include vanilla set yogurt, treacle yoghurt, fruit yogurt, curd, vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ice cream cups, chocolate and vanilla milk packets and assorted fruit drinks. Dedication to monitoring quality, special care, and attention to detail in the processing and packaging steps of production is the hallmark of Island Dairies. Through careful processing and packaging, all products are able to retain great taste, while reducing fat and preserving important vitamins and minerals.

The company received a number of national awards including Second Best Milk Processor at National Level and Best Milk Processor in Sabaragamuwa Province at the National Livestock Awarding Ceremony 2007 organised by the Ministry of Livestock Development and first place for the Sabaragamuwa Province at Shilpa 2007, 2008 and 2012 contests held by the Industrial Development Board of Sri Lanka.

The goal of the company is to manufacture dairy products that would meet international standards in order to improve the health of Sri Lankan consumers and reduce the country’s dependence on imports. The company’s overall goal is to produce the highest quality with a level of service that’s superior to all others in the business.
