Latest road building technology introduced

The latest technology in paving roads with concrete has been introduced to Sri Lanka. The ceremony in this connection was held at the Widiyawatte-Nagasmandiya Road under the patronage of Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa on 9 December.

The Western Province Road Development Authority (PRDA) has imported a machine for this purpose on the advice of Minister Rajapaksa to ensure paving roads country-wide with concrete is done efficiently and effectively in accordance with a concept of President Mahinda Rajapaksa. The Economic Development Ministry and the Road Development Authority have jointly undertaken the task. It is expected to import more machines of this type depending on the success of the project.

The new technology will raise the standard of road construction and eliminate the shortcomings arising from manually paving roads with concrete. Such roads without a proper finish often cause problems to the smooth movement of vehicular traffic. The machine will bring concrete roads to the level of carpeted roads.

Already many roads have been paved with concrete under programs such as ‘Gama Neguma,’ ‘One Task for One Village’ and ‘Maga Neguma’. All these were done with human labour which cannot cover more than 300 metres per day whereas machines will help to cover two kilometres a day.
