Mahaweli Reach Hotel marks World Water Day 2014

World Water Day was celebrated globally on 22 March under the theme ‘Water & Energy,’ which are closely interlinked and interdependent. In 2014, the UN System – working closely with its member states and other relevant stakeholders – is collectively bringing its attention to the water-energy nexus, particularly addressing inequities, especially for the ‘bottom billion’ who live in slums and impoverished rural areas and survive without access to safe drinking water, adequate sanitation, sufficient food and energy services.

It also aims to facilitate the development of policies and crosscutting frameworks that bridge ministries and sectors, leading the way to energy security and sustainable water use in a green economy. Mahaweli Reach Hotel together with the Greater Kandy Water Supply project conducted an awareness program for school children, stakeholders and associates in celebration of World Water Day 2014. Focusing on this year’s theme, the campaign utilised prominent touch points such as need of water conservation, cost of purified water, the need for using quality water fittings and quality plumbing services for water conservation and the role of students and the public to conserve water.

Distinguished officials from the National Institute of Education and of the Greater Kandy Water Supply project participated in this program, encouraging those present to join forces in a mutual journey towards being environmentally conscious, sustainable and making a difference to protect the world we live in order to conserve it for future generations.
