There has been a major breakdown of diplomatic relations with Sri Lanka’s giant neighbour India under the incumbent regime, the main opposition United National Party (UNP) charged yesterday, warning that the damage had to be fixed going forward.
Addressing a press briefing at the Party Headquarters of Sirikotha last morning, UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said New Delhi’s decision to skip the Commonwealth summit in Colombo was a major disadvantage for Sri Lanka.
“No one can say that a souring of ties with a neighbouring state is a good thing,” he explained.
The Indian Government had now notified the Government officially that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would not be attending the summit, the UNP General Secretary said.
“It is the Government’s responsibility not to make this non-attendance another reason to create problems in our ties with India,” Attanayake said.
He said the UNP hoped that the Government would take steps to repair the damage to relations between the two neighbouring nations at least after the summit concludes in Colombo. (DB)
