Ministry of Economic Development, UNDP collaborate on landmark climate change project

The Ministry of Economic Development signed an agreement with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to support the Governments rural livelihood development programmes to withstand climate-related shocks.
The agreement was signed between Dr. Nihal Jayathilaka, Secretary to the Ministry of Economic Development and Razina Bilgrami, Resident Representative a.i, UNDP Sri Lanka. Titled ‘Strengthening the Resilience of Post Conflict Recovery and Development to Climate Change Risks in Sri Lanka,’ the project aims to strengthen the existing government investments in rural livelihood development and build climate change adaptation models in selected districts.
The project is expected to be launched during the second week of July 2014 and will be implemented over a four-year period through the Ministry of Economic Development in close collaboration with the Ministry of Disaster Management and the Ministry of Environment and Renewable Energy at a total cost of Rs. 414 million.
The project will be financially supported through a grant of the Special Climate Change Fund (SCCF) managed by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF).
