As the largest environmental event in history, Earth Hour asked people and communities around the world to switch off their lights for one hour as a silent but powerful statement about the effects of human-accelerated climate change.
In 2011, more than 5,200 cities and towns in 135 countries worldwide switched off their lights for Earth Hour, and thousands of individuals took advantage of the opportunity to go ‘Beyond the Hour’ to change their energy consumption habits for good.
And even better the global digital footprint was in excess of 91 million and it indeed mobilised millions of people to go beyond. Mount Lavinia Hotel (MLH) has been active in their green initiatives and taken the Earth Hour celebrations very seriously and has made the idea of it more than just a trend.
“WE at MLH celebrated it three years consecutively and the only way Earth Hour can make a real difference is to recognise and celebrate the fact that this is the greatest time to be alive, and to illuminate global climate change,” MLH Group General Manager Bazeer Cassim said.
He also said: “This year we will not only go beyond the hour but will empower our community that we work closely in making a difference. MLH will partner with the Earth Hour organisation on 23 March, to make the day extra special. It will be a day mixed with responsibility, sustainability and a celebration of nature in its purest form.”
A slow food night emphasising the eco gastronomy concept popular at MLH and a beach clean up, are in the agenda of celebration. Earth Hour 2013 emphasised that it is more than just switching off the lights for an hour.
