MTD Walkers ventures into infrastructure development support services

MTD Walkers PLC, one of Sri Lanka’s most reputed and diversified holding business groups, has further diversified its business interests by establishing a “new” strategic business unit (SBU), Walkers Equipment Ltd. (WEL).
This new subsidiary of the company was incorporated for the primary purpose of conducting business activities as an Infrastructure Development Support Business (IDSB); to handle the distribution and maintenance of infrastructure development related machinery/equipment and allied products.
WEL was set up also taking into consideration the strategic and competitive advantage it offers to MTD Walkers PLC – which has under its umbrella both CML-MTD Construction Ltd. and Walkers Piling Ltd., both of which are amongst the top five infrastructure developers in Sri Lanka. Both these companies are engaged in numerous infrastructure development projects in Sri Lanka and overseas.
WEL has acquired the franchisee rights for ‘SANY’ branded machinery and equipment and is the exclusive and sole distributor for ‘SANY’ in the territory of Sri Lanka and Maldives. ‘SANY’ is amongst the largest and most established manufacturers’ of machinery and equipment in China with over 36 production facilities in China, USA, Germany and Indiaand isalsoranked amongst the top 10 global manufacturers of machinery and equipment.
The ‘SANY’ product portfolio consists mainly of concrete machinery, excavators, hoisting machinery, pile driving machinery, road construction machinery, port machinery and wind turbines. Boasting a population of 400 plus operational units of “SANY” machines and equipment in Sri Lanka, ‘SANY’ has already a considerably large customer base in both the public and private sectors. Most recently another 86 units of ‘SANY’ motor-graders were distributed to local government authorities (town councils, urban councils and municipal councils) throughout the island. A number of C1 graded contractors are also amongst the existing ‘SANY’ customers – namely International Construction Consortium (ICC), Maga Engineering Ltd. and CML-MTD Construction Ltd.
“Walkers Equipment Ltd. has set itself lofty goals of becoming a full line supplier of construction machinery and equipment, as well as achieving market leadership for its product portfolio within the next five years of operation,” WEL General Manager Yung Sheng Tsung said.
The company has set up an after-sales and technical support service centre at Sapugaskanda to provide all existing and future ‘SANY’ customers with an efficient, reliable and timely after-sale and technical support service. This facility is well equipped and staffed by trained and experienced technical personnel. Walkers Equipment Ltd. has also invested into the establishment of nine mobile service workshops with the aim of providing its customers with a fast, efficient and customer centric after-sales and technical support, delivery channel.
