The first year engineering students of SLIIT organised a design exhibition titled ‘Young Expo 2015’ at the SLIIT auditorium in Malabe recently. Over 90 exhibits, featuring a variety of designs, tools and solutions for real world engineering problems were showcased.
Along with the Chief Guest SLIIT President/CEO Prof. Lalith Gamage and Guest of Honour SLIIT Chairman Prof. Lakshman Ratnayake, the Deans of all the faculties and academic staff from the Engineering and other faculties were present at the opening ceremony.
Many industry specialists from corporates such as IFS, Virtusa, Dialog and zMessenger also attended the exhibition to witness young talent.
“Young Expo 2015 was the perfect platform for students to promote their unique initiatives, portray their knowledge and apply their skills in a practical manner. The projects showed us that the students have clearly understood the theoretical framework. Having an exhibition with many extraordinary projects, also gives students the opportunity to network with industry specialists, giving them an open path to enter the corporate world,” commented SLIIT Faculty of Engineering Senior Lecturer Madhawa Herath.
“Sri Lanka has a huge vacuum for innovation and entrepreneurs. Since Sri Lanka is almost in the semi development stage, it has great potential to develop further with these young practical engineers. Hence we at SLIIT aim to fill this vacuum by producing innovative and creative engineers,” stated Herath.
In comparison to a traditional institute, the curriculum at SLIIT is developed to suit the modern Engineering world. From the start of the degree programme, students are given the opportunity to be creative, think out of the box and learn with hands on experience. The Degree program also enables students to gain thorough knowledge, eloquent communication and soft skills.
Therefore the graduates from the Engineering faculty have an innovative mindset, with practical knowledge in order to suit the requirements of the modern world.
The four year BSc Engineering honours degree program of SLIIT allows students to opt for one of five major fields of study; Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics.
RoboFest is also another annual competition organised by the Faculty of Engineering at SLIIT which helps students to apply their knowledge and promote innovative skills of budding engineers.
