BOI Chairman Dr. Lakshman Jayaweera commending the industry for its contribution towards the economic development of the country observed that Sri Lanka can be the next Milan in terms of fashion in the future.
“Sri Lanka has made its mark in apparel sector through innovation, entrepreneurship and passion, and kept up with the latest trends in the world,” Dr. Jayaweera said. “I would like to see international supermodels wearing your clothes and walking down the runway here in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka can be the next Milan in fashion.”
With local apparel industry exporting to some big names in the apparel industry, this is indeed a possibility, he said.
“Your industry is an important one for our country’s economy. While creating a great economic platform for future of the nation, you have also improved the livelihood of our people.”
Since taking up office as Chairman of the BOI, Jayaweera has made several trips to the Free Trade Zone factories and held several discussions with investors and staffers to identify key issues faced by the industry. He identified energy cost as key among these issues and noted that measures will be taken to optimise and bring the costs down to be more competitive than the rest of the world.
