Standard Chartered is set to launch its Green Cover Project, an initiative to reduce paper wastage, whereby the bank will pledge to plant a tree for every customer signing up for an eStatement.
The initial impetus for the imitative was provided when volunteers from Standard Chartered planted 200 trees along the stretch of beach at Kosgoda with the help of an NGO. The bank hopes that this initial effort will inspire customers to sign up for having their bank statements delivered electronically.
Sanjay Wijemanne, Head of Consumer Banking, commenting on the Green Cover Project, said: “As with our other initiatives, we have sought multiple payoffs from the sustainability activity. The tree saplings at Kosgoda were planted near sea turtle nesting areas to help with the conservation of Sri Lanka’s marine turtle population, as we learned that when the turtle hatchlings emerge from the nest at night they immediately and rapidly crawl towards the brightest, lowest horizon which under natural conditions is the reflection of the moon and stars on the sea. However on most instances the hatchlings are disoriented by the street lights or hotel lights and head in the direction of the hotels and other buildings inland instead of the sea. Naturally this has dire consequences to the marine turtles.”
Standard Chartered will mobilise similar groups of volunteers to engage in restoring other imperilled habitats by replanting lost or destroyed flora coverage under the Green Cover Project. Minimising the negative impact on the environment, is an important focus of the Bank’s sustainability agenda, and Standard Chartered customers now have the opportunity to actively participate in ensuring the conservation of our environment for future generations.
The conversion to an eStatement is as easy as calling up the Bank and making a request to have paper statements converted in to electronic statements. Standard Chartered Customers, wishing to be a part of this initiative may call 2480480 or 2480444 any time of the day to sign up for electronic statements.
