Environmental Day observed every year on 5 June to promote awareness on the importance of preserving our biodiversity is aimed at identifying issues related to environment and ways to take corrective action.

Taj Samudra, an Earthcheck Silver certified five-star hotel located in the heart of Colombo, has always been a supporter of green economy and environmental sustainability. Preserving nature and preventing pollution is a mandatory everyday topic of discussion at the hotel.

On 5 June, General Manager of Taj Samudra Rohit Khosla together with all his staff went the extra mile to create awareness of the importance of this day. Taj Samudra Colombo conducted a tree plantation drive and volunteered to clean up the Galle Face Green.

At a celebration held at the North lawns of Taj Samudra Khosla and the Guest of Honour Ravi Shanker, CEO of TATA Communications in Sri Lanka and in house guest Dasan and family from Dubai planted six mango trees in remembrance of the Environment Day 2012 at Taj Samudra.

Following which the plantation drive begun – a fun-filled activity for a great cause! All attendees at the event were the cause for major traffic interruptions on the Galle Face Centre Road that morning. Taj Samudra staff stood by the side of the main road handing plants to vehicles driving by – almost every vehicle on the street  stopped to pick up a plant and to wish each other a happy environment day 2012. The gesture of gifting a plant was very much appreciated by the public at this event.

The morning celebrations came to an end with the attendees enjoying a healthy vegetarian meal of manioc and coconut sambol. To be extra green, at this special occasion, all attendees were served their meal on to a lotus leaf. No plastic materials were made use of for this occasion.

Environment day activities didn’t end there. That evening the staff and management of the Taj Samudra volunteered to clean the Galle Face Green opposite the hotel.

The day was concluded with a very meaningful speech by Khosla. “We believe we must set long-term objectives in terms of caring and protecting the environment. This is part of our commitment to be a good corporate citizen, as well as doing the responsible thing keeping in mind the future generation. I count on everyone’s support for our green initiative to succeed.”
