TMC Colombo at Excel World

The Board of Management of The Management Club recently concluded negotiations with Excel World Entertainment Park to relocate its Club from the Galle Face Hotel to the premises of Excel World with effect from 1 October 2012.

The move at end August was propelled by the imminent renovation plans of the GFH management and members interests are being looked after in the interim period by a skeleton administrative staff.

Having held a decade’s tenure at the Galle Face Hotel, members are now privileged to have access to even more advantages at the new location with excellent conferencing, banqueting and entertainment facilities all under one roof. Excel World Entertainment Park holds an amazing array of facilities in an enviable location within the business hub of the city, yet having a serene atmosphere by virtue of the large acreage of land on which the complex stands.

TMC as it is popularly known today has among its membership the cream of practically all professional firms in the country among its managers. With a combined membership of around 600, CMI-UK Sri Lanka Branch and TMC strive to bring standards of management to international standards and heights of excellence.

Not only are seminars, workshops and interactive sessions being continuously held with local and international facilitators, but CMI and TMC also often organise social activities to network their members. Generally on a monthly basis TMC organises many evening presentations, one or two day training programs related to management, large annual events such as the Wisdom Quiz series, the TMC Cricket Sixes and the Motor Rally which bring together members, sponsors and external invitees in team and sporting spirit.

The vision of TMC is to bring together professional managers in order that they may interact with one another within, develop their potential management, leadership and business skills to the fullest and make a substantial contribution to society.

Its objectives are to provide an opportunity for the growing population of professional managers to meet and greet regularly at interacting programs of value and worth, infuse, sharpen and develop management, leadership and business skills beneficial to our members all year round through management presentations and other for a; to have the opportunity of an acceptable, congenial venue, to have exclusive access and use of certain facilities free and at discounted rates. The Management Club is not a social club but one where middle and top management have opportunities to fraternise, participate in management programs, improve themselves and their businesses.

It has been long felt by the Board of Management that the spirit of leadership and entrepreneurship is somewhat lacking amongst most of the young professionals due to weightage being given to obtaining professional credentials and less to refining themselves to meet tough future challenges. Thus a key part of the vision of TMC is to unearth the latent leadership traits inherent in all managers through continuous professional advancement programs.

One of the recent well accepted and innovative programs was a two day residential seminar at TMC Kalutara in May 2012 where TMC invited American leadership trainer Bob Feldman to impart valuable advice on ‘Becoming a Better Leader’ in their personal and professional career with Feldman taking participants through creative communication and presentation skills. By bonding participants through various exercises Feldman created a long lasting value addition to their professional careers.

Emphasis on unearthing leadership qualities and nurturing future leaders

A running series of short programs have been ‘An Evening with Business Leaders,’ where successful personalities are invited to meet the membership. Its long duration programs entail evening programs, day and residential workshops.

TMC’s management seminars touch on guiding future leaders on topics that range from leading and setting the tone of one’s organisation by example – infusing leadership qualities with a touch of creativity giving an edge and a stronger profile in today’s workplace – learning creative strategies as from the field of the performing arts to improve one’s skills as a creative leader by adding a creative touch to one’s leadership initiatives in order to generate enthusiasm, loyalty, empowerment and increased productivity among the staff in the organisation – expanding and improving of communication skills, enhancing personal presence and fostering a positive attitude towards change, risk-taking and play within the professional business environment.

Today it is important that all professional managers understand the impact of leadership presence and the ability to connect authentically with the thoughts and feelings of others in order to motivate and inspire them towards a desired outcome. Budding leaders need to be able to identify the capabilities of subordinates, maintain one’s credibility and integrity, establish confidence and inspire trust, building an environment for team work, managing risks, planning – rhythms of the workday. A manager needs to be a choreographer, an effective decision maker, and requires many other innovative skills of creative leadership. TMC seeks to present workshops that are not a run-of-the-mill where participants experience a difference and retain lessons learned.
