There should be proper program for solid waste management: President

President Maithripala Sirisena emphasised the need for a proper program for solid waste which is a major threat to the environment. He pointed out that every state and private institution should fulfil their duties correctly on this issue.

The President made these remarks recently at the Progress Review Meeting of the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment.

The discussion related to Mahaweli development was held at the auditorium of the Mahaweli Development Ministry while discussion on environment was held at the auditorium of the Environment Ministry in Battaramulla.

At this meeting special attention was paid to the issue of solid waste management and the current projects, difficulties faced when implementing those projects and possible solutions that can be given to those issues on solid waste management were discussed in detail.

Here, the representatives revealed that the local Government officials are not doing their duties properly, which is a major problem. Attention was also paid to issues relating to finding a suitable section of land to discharge the waste and illegal discharge of hazardous waste.

When discussing about the Mahaweli Development, reviewing the progress of the projects implemented by the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and future plans were discussed in detail.

The President instructed the officials to draw attention to problems such as the conducting of dam protection projects without using proper standards.

Attention was also paid to the progress of the Moragahakanda resettlement process.
