The Short Film Festival 2011 organised by the National Film Corporation saw ‘Katawhapang Siriyawathi’ a short film directed by Chamila Ruwan Kumari taking away the awards for Best Film, Best Direction and Best Actress – crowning it as the highest winning short film for the night. The win comes from over 200 entries which were presented for the awards ceremony this year.

According to the reviewers, this being Chamila’s first attempt at writing and directing a film of this nature was worthy of mention, and it was of their opinion that her experience and exposure received from being in the advertising industry has made an immense impact on the quality of her presentation. Chamila, who is currently employed at Triad (Pvt) Ltd. as an Assistant Creative Director, has now proved to be an inspiration to all young creative minds of our nation.

The story is based on the torment of a child who up until adulthood, was not allowed to speak up in her defence and as a result took her life in an attempt to gain peace – a reality seen in most living in today’s social culture.

Speaking about her win, Chamila stated, “It is a sad reality that we see youngsters, especially females, going through this torment day in and day out in today’s society. What I attempted to portray through this short story is the prevailing harsh truth. The recognition that the film has received is proof that this realism was received well even by the narrow minded living in the country today. I convey my sincere gratitude to all those who helped me make this production a reality.”

For Triad, this recognition of local thoughts, beliefs and hopes received by one of their own, further strengthens their credo of ‘Sri Lanka Can’. It stands testimony to the timely importance that is placed on insights that are based on local values – a philosophy that has awarded Triad as the agency that has transformed the advertising landscape of Sri Lanka over the years.
