  • Hands over milling machine, backhoe loaders for Colombo’s Metro Urban Development Project
Colombo has been undergoing urban regeneration under the Urban Development Authority-headed Metro Colombo Urban Development Project over the past five years. United Tractors and Equipment (UTE) recently lent its support to this endeavour, providing construction and paving equipment to help overhaul Colombo’s road network. A CAT PM 200 cold planer and four Cat 428F backhoe loaders were ceremonially handed over to the Mayor of Colombo Mohamed Muzammil by Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa at a special event. This was part of some Rs.450 m worth of equipment and vehicles supplied for the Metro Colombo Urban Development project which comes under the Colombo Municipal Council. Among those in attendance at the occasion was Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga, World Bank Country Director for Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Francoise Clottes. Representing UTE at the handing over of the equipment was Chairman of UTE Priath Fernando.  The main aim of the Metro Colombo Urban Development Project is to develop Colombo through reducing the negative socioeconomic impact of flooding, while making the city more pedestrian-friendly by building safe, clean and convenient walkways. “UTE is proud to contribute towards making Colombo city more accessible and pedestrian-friendly. The Colombo Municipal Council has placed their trust in the quality of our equipment and service. In the past, we have powered the building of highways and ports, and we plan to forge ahead, providing the highest quality machinery at the best value for money,” said UTE Chairman Priath Fernando. The CAT PM 200 milling machine supplied by UTE will provide a valuable service in resurfacing Colombo’s roads. The milling machine will scrape damaged asphalt off the road to a specified depth and thickness, allowing for resurfacing to an even level. The CAT PM 200 combines enhanced production capabilities, optimal performance and superior service, allowing it to perform challenging milling applications with impressive results. The large displacement and high torque of the PM 200 allow for high productivity, while the folding front loading conveyor allows for more versatility in transporting material. The machine also has four steering modes, allowing it to navigate tight corners and narrow streets, which is ideal for local conditions. Caterpillar is the leading brand in construction and power generating equipment worldwide and in Sri Lanka and has been represented by UTE in Sri Lanka since 1947.
