Vogue Jewellers’ design team once again emerged victorious at the prestigious Dubai International Jewellery Design Competition. Their uniquely-constructed piece – entitled ‘Planetary Alignment’, a diamond and white gold adornment which can be worn in five different ways – claimed first prize in the Professional Group Award category of the Futuristic Design segment.

“When the planets of the galaxy line up in a straight line, a phenomenon that is believed to occur only once in 200 years, creates a spectacular picture. I was inspired by this spectacular and unique occurrence to design a necklace,” said Vogue design team member Danushi Aluthwala, who conceptualised this winning masterpiece.
Demonstrating the multiple ways of wearing the necklace and the relevance of its design, she further elaborated: “What makes this design even more outstanding is that it can be worn in five different ways - as a complete necklace, just a necklace with the pendant detached, the pendant only, as a chocker or as a bracelet.
“This design represents the entire solar system, using white gold and diamonds. Even the rings round Saturn are symbolically encapsulated in this masterpiece with added details such as the planets’ rotation enabled. I am grateful to our highly-skilled master craftsmen, who repeatedly achieve exceptional quality in execution, taking these unique pieces to a totally new level. You can clearly see how the specialisation in crafting an exquisite item is an integral aspect of a winning design which is as intricate as this.”
The Dubai International Jewellery Design Competition is the most prestigious competition in the region. It was held recently for the sixth consecutive year. Its objective is to reward excellence, innovation and creativity within the industry, both among the Emerging Designers and Professional teams.
A highly qualified international jury assesses and selects the winners of each category based on set criteria which includes relevance to the design theme, the intelligent use of material, stones and sizes, how the jewellery sits in a retail environment and whether it is commercially viable. The winning items were exhibited at the Dubai International Jewellery Week, which was held parallel to the award ceremony.
This is the second year in a row that Danushi bagged this coveted award in the Futuristic Design category at the Dubai International Jewellery Design Competition. Her innovative designs have created groundbreaking concepts in the international jewellery world. Her indigenous dual-purpose design, based on a wind turbine, won the first prize in the Futuristic Design category at the competition last year.
Additionally, Danushi’s creations such as a diamond necklace inspired by a delicate Vara flower, a necklace inspired by a Sandakadapahana and a Sesathatoo have won first prize at Facets 2013 and 2012 respectively.
Furthermore, Vogue design team member Amila Athuraliya has won the first prize for his innovative design inspired by the ‘the Glamour of Flowing Kapok’ in the ‘Innovative Jewellery Design’ category of the Dubai International Jewellery Design Competition 2011.
“I am thankful to the management of Vogue Jewellers, spearheaded by our Managing Director Anura Hemachandra, for the guidance and encouragement given to us to excel in this manner. The excellent standards maintained in the designing and crafting process are vital factors for achieving world-class standards. With the dawn of the New Year, I take this opportunity to invite budding designers to pursue the perfection and ingenuity that will help one achieve excellence,” she concluded.
