WiLAT (Women in Logistics and Transport) Sri Lanka partnered with Earth Hour Sri Lanka to raise their voice for climate action to promote sustainable lifestyle and best practices in the industry they operate in their recently held third year anniversary which was organised to also mark International Women’s Day.
“Being in an industry that is a contributor to carbon emissions, we as Logistics and Transport professionals have a moral obligation to do our part to mitigate the carbon emissions in any way we can,” said WiLAT Sri Lanka Chairperson Gayani De Alwis.
In Sri Lanka, Earth Hour is asking the Government, businesses, organisations and individuals to be part of this cause by switching off non-essential lights (and corporate signages) on earth hour day( 19 March from 8:30 p.m.- 9:30 p.m.), help spread awareness about climate change issues and be part of this cause by adding your voice in this global call for action and going beyond the symbolic gesture of switching off non-essential lights for Earth Hour and to drive climate action throughout the year, leading an environmentally conscious lifestyle.
Commenting on the partnership, Earth Hour Sri Lanka Country Manager Abdul Qadir Uvais said, “I am happy that institutions that represent the industry such as WILAT are coming forward to take climate action and supporting the Earth Hour movement and its call for action.” Commenting further Uvais stated, “It’s evident that climate change is real and it’s the most urgent threat our planet is facing today. For an issue of this magnitude we need to work collectively together in order to change climate change. Our actions today will decide what tomorrow looks like for years to come. This partnership with Women in Logistics and Transport (WILAT) Sri Lanka will surely strengthen the call from the logistics and transport industry to drive sustainability in to their DNA and mitigate or neutralise the carbon emissions from their operations which will help us change climate change and take climate action now.”
WiLAT is the women’s forum of CILT (The Charted Institute of Logistics and Transport). It is part of an ever expanding global network within CILT. The main objective of WiLAT is to promote and encourage the art and science of logistics and transport among women. Currently WiLAT is present in 18 countries with over 1,800 members in the global network which is expanding rapidly.
Earth Hour is WWF’s global environmental movement. Born in Sydney in 2007, Earth Hour has grown to become the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment, inspiring individuals, communities, businesses and organisations in over 170 countries and territories to take tangible climate action. Celebrating the tenth edition of its signature lights out event in March 2016, the Earth Hour movement continues to harness the power of its millions of supporters to shine a light on climate action and the power of the individual to change climate change.
