Access Engineering PLC, one of the foremost civil engineering companies in Sri Lanka, successfully concluded the rehabilitation and improvements of the Colombo-Kandy Road section from Kadawatha to Nittambuwa. The rehabilitation plan was initiated by the Road Development Authority (RDA) with the assistance of local bank funding in order to ease the traffic congestions in between the economic corridors.

The Colombo-Kandy (A1) road is the main access route to the commuters across Central Province, North Western Province, North Central Province, Northern Province and the Eastern Province to access the capital city. As the main contractor of the project, Access Engineering PLC (AEL) was responsible of widening and improvements to existing cross drainage structures, elevated foot walks and centre median/islands, rehabilitation and improvement of road pavement structure, improvement of the existing drainage system and also assisting extensive land acquisition and utility shifting works.

Furthermore, the work scope also included town improvements to Imbulgoda, Balummahara, Yakkala, and Thihariya junctions, widening of four bridges over Balummahara Oya and Uruwal Oya, widening and rehabilitation of two major RCC girder bridges to 25 m and 22 m widths.

The 23 km, two-lane stretch from Kadawatha (17+000 km) to Nittambuwa (40+000 km) was rehabilitated and improved to a four-lane standard carriageway where the width of a single lane was 3.7 m with a centre median of 1.2 m wide allowing to minimise the traffic congestion during the peak hours. The pedestrian walkways were also constructed with 2.4 m wide soft shoulders on either side of the road along with 0.6 m wide hard shoulders to fulfil pedestrians’ convenience.

The widened four-lane carriageway ensures free flow of long distance and metropolitan bound traffic leading to contribute towards the improvement of the overall transport infrastructure network towards supporting the economic growth of the country. AEL is proud to be a key contributor in facilitating higher level of access to main roads and expressways while gradually spurring the industrial development along the economic corridor.
