Jaffna took place on 11 January at the Green Grass Hotel, Jaffna followed by a program on the following day; the 12 January at Hotel Sooriyamahal, Point Pedro.

Both programs were memorable as they provided an opportunity for S-lon to share new knowledge, skills, and techniques with their professionals but it was more significant as the program was held in Point Pedro for the very first time in the history of S-lon.

S-lon is a cherished household name in the local construction and building material industry and S-lon Lanka Ltd., is a subsidiary of The Capital Maharaja Group. In October 2001, the S-lon Plumber’s Club was established under the patronage of Capital Maharaja Group Group Director S.C. Weerasekara to develop and evolve standards surrounding the modern plumbing industry and uplift the professionalism and image of the plumbing profession.

Since its inception, 8,000 plumbers around the country have been the force behind the active S-lon plumbers’ club, benefitting from the practical and informative area-based programs that are carried across the country. The programs are conducted with S-lon’s most respected senior professionals in the field to ensure that their members receive a holistic and up-to-date learning experience, “When we started this, our objective was to continually develop the local plumbing industry and improve the professional and personal standards of plumbers” explained Capital Maharaja Group Group Director S.C. Weerasekera. This aim extends towards offering members career guidance and support towards developing their career prospects and targets through NTT (National Trade Test) and National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) with the partnership of NAITA.

The support of the Plumber’s Club doesn’t end there. They also offer members an insurance scheme that encourages a habit of saving and extends support to them during an untimely demise or injury.  Benefits from this S-lon’s initiative have been extended even to the family members as the children of the members are eligible for the “Nena Saviya” scholarship scheme. This educational support program sponsors financial support to children who excel in grade five scholarship exams until A/Ls.

While the aim of the workshops was to empower the plumbers’ community, it was also conducted with their health and wellbeing in mind. Both programs were conducted under stringent public health regulations and held in partnership with the National Apprentice and Industrial Training Authority (NAITA).

Both programs were held under the auspices of Product Development Manager and S-lon Plumber’s Club Manager Mohomed Shiraas. Other representatives from S-lon included the S-lon Lanka Ltd., CEO Gehan Amarasinghe, Dealer Sales Development Manager Prasanna Chandrasekeran, Brand Manager Mohamed Rizny, Jaffna Re-Distribution Centre Managing Director Kirubakaran and S-lon Area Sales Manager Anandarooban . Several officials of the National Apprentice and Industrial Training Authority also participated in the programs.

Whilst Department of Buildings Northern Province Deputy Chief Engineer Kadirkamar Thirukkumar participated as the Chief Guest at the Jaffna program and Northern Provincial Council Department of Education Director of School Works V. Menon participated as the Chief Guest of the inaugural program at Point Pedro.
