Access Engineering Plc, one of Sri Lanka’s eminent engineering companies, has been awarded the design and construction of Beira Lake Bridge and Associated Works under the Waterfront Integrated Resort Project, the one-of-a-kind iconic mix development project of Water Front Properties Ltd, a subsidiary of John Keells Holdings.
The Waterfront Integrated Resort Project is a multi-faced development that consists of a luxury hotel, convention centre, entertainment facilities, international standard shopping mall, luxury condominiums and office space.
The location of the development along the banks of the Beira Lake requires a bridge to be constructed connecting the development to Justice Akbar Mawatha.
Access Engineering Plc has been awarded the contract to handle design and construction work on this 35-metre-wide and 50-metre-long steel bridge which will be built upon three piers and one abutment while the other end will be connected to one of the buildings. The design and supply of the steel superstructure has been undertaken by Centunion S.A. of Spain. The proposed bridge will consist of six lanes, with aluminium claddings on either side, flower troughs, high mast light towers and decorative lamps while the deck will be constructed of pre-cast concrete slabs and in-situ concrete finished with asphalt concrete. The deck, which rises from the side of Justice Akbar Mawatha, subsequently diverges into two key lanes which give easy access to the hotel development and condominium development.
The proposed bridge will be developed as the main access point to the development and will provide easy access from Justice Akbar Mawatha. Once completed, the proposed bridge will significantly improve the aesthetic appeal of the waterfront development as well as Colombo’s city architecture.
The bridge, along with the rest of the development, is designed by world-famous British-based Sri Lankan architect Cecil Balmond.
“The project team of Access Engineering Plc is now mobilised at Sir Chittampalam Gardiner Mawatha, Colombo 2 and has commenced operations of the development which is scheduled to be completed in October 2017,” said Deputy General Manager Prabashana Kumara, who handles the construction operations of the Beira Lake Bridge Project.
