President Maithripala Sirisena last week instructed the relevant officials to take necessary steps to use sea sand in constructing government buildings in the future, after conducting further analysis regarding the technology of using sea sand in building construction work.
Attention has been drawn regarding this initiative as one of the steps the Government has taken to protect natural resources.
The President gave this instruction during a discussion held at the President’s Official Residence, regarding the environmental issues prevailing in the Trincomalee District.
The attention of the President was also drawn to introducing the concept of using environmentally friendly technologies for construction work instead of using natural resources like wood.
During the meeting, issues related to the destruction of forests, issues related to the wildlife, sand mining, waste disposal issues and land reclamation, pertaining to the district were discussed in detail.
President Sirisena further instructed the officials to work in collaboration with relevant ministries to solve these issues.
Ministry Secretaries, including Secretary to the President P.B. Abeykoon, Secretary for the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment Udaya R. Seneviratne, State Officials and many others participated at this meeting.
