Nawalakanda Tea Factory, Sri Lanka’s third largest single tea producing factory for the past one-and-a-half decades, is renowned for producing teas with a very unique character.
The factory is about 200 meters above sea level in a village called Nawalakanda about 15 kilometres off the Pelmadulla-Embilipitiya main road. The factory is located in the Ratnapura District of the Sabaragamuwa Province and the tea manufactured in the factory fall in to the Orthodox Low Grown catalogue at the weekly tea auctions.
At the tea auction held on 14 December 2010, a line of BOP1 from Nawalakanda factory fetched an all time record price of Rs. 740. The sale was handled by brokers John Keells PLC, and the tea was purchased by Stassen Exports Ltd.
All time record price for Sithaka
Sithaka Tea Factory, famous for the quality of teas its being produced on a weekly basis and obtaining weekly top prices at the Colombo tea auctions, recorded and established an all time record price for a grade BOP1 at Rs. 740.
The price came up at the 12 December tea auctions, surpassing its own previous all time record price of Rs. 710, which was established at the previous week’s auction of 7 December 2010.
The garden is owned by Lallith Liyanage of RTS Group and the sales were handled by tea brokers John Keells PLC.
Sri Lankan tea has a reputation as finest tea in the world and it contributes to the country’s GDP on a large scale every year. Sabaragamuwa, the largest province in Sri Lanka, has a constant rainfall and its warm and humid climate is ideal for cultivating and manufacturing low grown tea.
The 40-year-old Lalith Liyanage is the son of E. L. W. Fernando – a retired planter with realisation of potential for tea industry in the region – and is the Chairman of the diversified group.
The group has nine subsidiaries; namely, Sithaka/Avissawella Tea Factory, Hidellana Tea Factory, R.T.S. Tea Nursery, R.T.S. Heavy Equipment, R.T.S. Engineering, R.T.S. Metal Crusher, Bopath Falls Rock Chalets, R.T.S. Agribusiness and Lake Serenity Bouquet Hotel.
Conscious of its social responsibility toward the community, R.T.S. Holdings has been actively involved in building 350 homes for those affected in the Hambantota District following the tsunami.
