APL, the world’s fifth largest shipping line, has announced the launch of certified-clean containers for Halal shipments from Malaysia.

The additional cleaning process (SERTU) of containers is certified by the Malaysia Islamic Development Council (JAKIM) and meets Islamic law requirements.

Halal items are permissible for use or consumption under Islamic religious law (Syariah).

“This new service offering is APL’s response to customer concerns on transporting Halal cargo,” said Aziz Toha, Managing Director for APL Malaysia. “The service addresses customers’ sensitivity that their goods, shipped to large Halal food markets in Southeast Asia and the Middle East, are transported in containers that meet Syariah requirements.”

The new service will be available to shippers for both dry and refrigerated containers.

After the normal washing process, the container will undergo additional cleaning (SERTU) steps involving the use of clay and water.

The cleansed empty container will be sealed and a SERTU sticker will be attached to the container on completion of the SERTU process. APL will then provide customers a SERTU certificate for a single journey originating from Malaysia.

The service will commence from Port Klang and may be extended to include the ports of Penang and Pasir Gudang later this year.
