THE Biyagama Base Hospital has reopened its doors after a structural and interior makeover to improve its service to the community. Thousands of patients who rely upon the facility in the Biyagama area will benefit from the renovations that have addressed areas of the hospital that were in need of urgent repair.

With the local community highly dependent on the hospital for medical emergencies as well as a range of other healthcare requirements, the new facilities have been warmly received by both medical staff and patients. The improvements included repairs to the ceiling of the dental clinic, structural repairs to the doors and windows of the wards, the fixing of a new fence and exterior gate along with a new coat of paint to the entire hospital. Through these enhancements, the hospital is now able to provide a safer and cleaner environment for the 450 patients who use this hospital on a daily basis.

Speaking at the hospital’s official opening ceremony, Chief Medical Officer of Biyagama Hospital Dr. Edirisinghe said: “This is something that the hospital has needed for many years and, now that it has been achieved, we are pleased to be able to offer our patients the best possible service possible. The renovation is the result of a lot of hard work and dedication by all involved and will benefit the community greatly.”

The structural repair and refurbishment of the hospital’s exterior and interior was lead and funded by Fonterra Brands Lanka, following discussions with Dr. Edirisinghe on the facility’s immediate needs. The initiative took two months and also involved input from staff of Fonterra and the hospital to make the vision a reality.

The Biyagama Base Hospital caters mainly to the employees of the Biyagama Industrial Zone, who are located in the Gampaha district. The Hospital, which is the only medical facility available to the large number of workers employed in the Zone, treats medical emergencies as well as providing medical services to the communities and schools within the area.

CEO Fonterra Sri Lanka Achyut Reddy said: “At Fonterra we are committed to helping the communities that we work in and are continually looking for the best ways to give back. With operations in Biyagama, the area and its people are very important to us and we were delighted to contribute to the excellent work of Biyagama Hospital.”
