Cal Exports Lanka bags top awards at Excellence Awards 2010

Cal Exports the exports arm of the Public quoted conglomerate Chemanex Plc bagged Gold medal in the Medium Export Category at The National Business Excellence Awards held on 26 November 2010. Cal Exports were also adjudged runner up in the Manufacturing of Chemicals and Ceramics sector.

The National Business awards is the pioneer awards ceremony in the country conducted by the National Chamber of Commerce in Sri Lanka which recognises the excellence and innovation amongst local business enterprises. All ventures which have contributed to the socio- economic development of the country are given recognition on a national platform for its excellence in focus oriented business and its due diligence in making sure its employees, the stake holders and the country as a whole is benefited.

All enterprises and business ventures that have performed to their potential and have utilised all available resources demonstrating phenomenal progress in key areas of entrepreneurship such as business and financial performance, innovation, global market penetration, knowledge integration, research - development and technological investment, capacity building, performance management, corporate governance and corporate social responsibility are evaluated by judges who have excelled in their specific skill.

CAL exports Lanka a venture accredited with an ISO 9001:2000 certification specialises in the manufacturing and supplying of specialty chemicals and additives to over 32 destinations spanning 4 continents. Key markets include Europe, Middle East, South Africa and New Zealand. The company has been the preferred supplier of chemicals and additives to most multi nationals who are in the business of manufacturing finished goods to the consumer and have time and again been lauded for its stringent quality standards, on time deliveries and improved efficiencies which give the customer and consumer both cost benefits.

The chairman of CAL Exports Pvt Ltd who is also the managing director and CEO of Chemanex Preethi Jayawardena said: “The future economic growth of our country lies in its exports. However the recent strength in the value of the rupee is causing a major setback to the export led growth of the country. Although we have done our utmost in improving the productivity of our organisation we are still finding it extremely difficult to penetrate into the fiercely competitive export market when venturing into expanding our existing portfolio.”

Jayawardena is a chartered accountant and was also a former council member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka. He is also the senior deputy chairman of the Ceylon National Chamber of Industries and a member of the Monetary Policy Consultative Committee of the Central Bank.

CAL exports were also awarded the Gold Medal at the annual National Chamber of Exporters Award ceremony held in 2009 in the Industries Large sector category further underlying its dominance and excellence in their chosen industry. The parent company- Chemanex Plc have previously won the coveted Gold Medal for the Best Performance Management practices and The Gold Medal for the category – Trading, at the National Business Excellence Awards.
